Supreme Court stays post-lathicharge cases booked against SKM leaders

GANGTOK, 13 Nov: The Supreme Court yesterday stayed cases and chargesheets against Sikkim Krantikari Morcha members registered in the wake of the lathicharge on its head office here [at Convoy Ground on 11 February], informs SKM general secretary [legal affairs] Sonam Bhutia.
The order passed by Justice Singhvi states that the police action on the day was “unwarranted” and that the subsequent cases registered against SKM members be stayed.
This followed the submission of the report of the Commission headed by IC Divedi, ex-DGP of Upon the Sikkim Police lathicharge led by IGP [Law & Order] Akshaya Sachdeva.
Mr. Bhutia further informs that Justice Singhvi adjourned the matter by two weeks “in order to examine in detail the enquiry report.”
The petitioners were represented by Prashant Bhushan and Sunil Mathew who reportedly argued that the IGP should be suspended and a criminal case registered against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation along with initiation of Departmental proceedings against him by the CVC.
