GANGTOK, 10 Nov: President of India, Pranab Mukherjee met the Directors of all the National Institutes of Technology [NIT] during a conference held on 07-08 November.
The Prime Minister and the Minister of Human Resources Development of Government of India also attended the two-day conference. This is the first time that the President has met the directors of the NITs.
Interacting with the President, Prof. A.B. Samaddar [Director, National Institute of Technology, Sikkim] discussed the development of NIT Sikkim in terms of good quality faculty, research and academic development was reported. The President is visitor to the NIT Sikkim.
A press release informs that the problems of internet connectivity were noted and special note was taken about the inordinate delay in transfer of already allocated land at Khamdong whereas all other NE NITs have got land long back. As a result the expansion is not possible for more degree programmes at BTech, M. Tech and PhD levels, it was informed.
“The Government of India is planning to develop the NITs at International level. NITs are considered to be the Institutes of National Importance. It is also expected that the NITs will gradually work for development of the local community, and also develop technology of local relevance. Hence it is very important that the land allocated at Khamdong is handed over to the NIT immediately to avoid recurring loss to Sikkim,” the release adds.
