GANGTOK, 14 Nov: The 60th All India Cooperative Week was observed at Melli Dara with a function held today on the theme “Cooperative Governance, Leadership and Reforms.” All India Cooperative Week is observed from 14-20 November every year.
A press release informs that the celebration was organized by Melli Dara Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Ltd. [MPCS] in collaboration with JRCS Office, Namchi.
President of Melli Dara Paiyong GPU, DB Pradhan welcomed all the guests and attendees which was followed by the reading out of the Governor’s and Chief Minister’s messages on the occasion. President, Melli Dara MPCS Ltd., Ganesh K. Rai spoke about cooperative societies in modern times and threw light on the day’s theme.
He also highlighted the need for resurgence of Cooperative Societies for the benefit of the common people and briefed about different activities conducted by Melli Dara MPCS Ltd. along with those carried out through cooperative societies in Melli constituency. He expressed his gratitude to the state government for granting a building for Melli Dara MPCS and informed the gathering that the building would be used for different purposes including rural shopping centre, Bank etc.
Executive Officer, SICUN, PBH Subba addressed the programme and spoke on the aims and objectives behind forming cooperative societies. He urged all the members to be sincere and said that sincerity among the members is the building block of cooperative societies. Mr Subba informed the people about the big infrastructure of SICUN being constructed at Assam Lingzey.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest, Minister Roads and Bridges, RB Subba highlighted that cooperation demands sincerity. “The SDF government has been pushing for cooperative movement in the state since 2002. The government’s stand towards strengthening cooperative societies in the state has been testified by the fact that cooperative societies in the state are awarded contractual works without issuing tenders”, he said.
The Minister urged all the members to avoid subletting of contractual works and encouraged them to take up other income generating activities apart from contractual works. He urged the officials present to see to it that the cooperatives are not discouraged due to red-tapism, the release mentions.
Melli MLA, Tulshi D. Rai, was also present today as the guest of honour.
The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by vice president of Melli Dara MPCS, Padam B. Lamichaney.
