GANGTOK, 30 Oct: The unreliable road infrastructure and inclement weather conditions notwithstanding, border trade between Sikkim and Tibetan Autonomous Region posted record transactions in September with exports from Sikkim in the month crossing the crore mark!
Records put together by the Customs Department reveal that Sikkim traders exported goods worth Rs. 1,40,70,400 in September last month while bringing in imports to the tune of Rs. 21,14,466 over Nathula. As far as official statistics go, border trade over Nathula is still heavily in Sikkim’s favour.
Sikkim traders imported mostly carpets, readymade garments, blankets and quilts in September. In the export segment, vegetable oil alone accounted for Rs. 64,14,400, records reveal.
As compared to business transactions made in the month of August this season, September recorded two times higher business, the report states. In the month of August, Sikkim traders exported goods worth only Rs. 64.80 lakhs while making imports to the tune of Rs. 10,60,114.
