GANGTOK, 29 Oct: Two-day workshop was organized by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights in collaboration with National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development at NIPCCD complex, Hauz Khas, New Delhi on 24 and 25 October.
A press release informs that the workshop was organized for all the Chairpersons of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights of different states of India. Chairperson, State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Sikkim, Manita Pradhan attended the workshop accompanied by Pema Yangchen Sherpa.
The workshop extensively deliberated on subjects like UNCRC; RTE, legislative intervention and ground realities; Juvenile Justice [Care & Protection of Children] Act 2000; POCSO Act, 2012; ICPS; ICDS-Strengthening & restructuring; Child Labour Policy-legislation & scheme of National Child Labour Policy; Role of SCPCR to monitor all above Acts & Schemes in protection of Child Rights.
Ms Pradhan apprised the house about the functioning of SCPCR of Sikkim and highlighted the entire policy and programmes of the Sikkim Government under the Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling and is far ahead as compared to other states of India in ensuring the welfare of children in every field. Child Care & Protection is the priority area for the Sikkim Government, the release adds.
The Chairperson, further apprised the house about the unique programmes initiated for children ranging from distribution of uniforms to children of ICDS centres, enhanced honorarium to Anganwadi workers & helpers and distribution of laptops free of cost to the students of Class XI & XII studying in government schools, which was lauded by Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Kaushal Singh
and others present in the workshop, the release states.
Mr Singh in his address said, “It is time to strengthen the functioning of the State for Protection of Child Rights across the country to discharge their duties and obligations towards protecting and promoting the rights of children in all facets of life so as to combat challenges awaiting them at various levels regarding empowering children to access their Right to Education, Monitoring of POCSO Act, 2012, to monitor implementation of developmental policies & programmes initiated by Central and State Governments and entire gamut of rights of a child in the sectors of child survival, nutrition, health, education, skill training, care and protection of a child are the concerns of National and State Commission for Protection of Child Rights”.
The release mentions that SCPCR shall be organizing a coordination meeting with the officials of the line departments to review programmes like ICDS, ICPS, SSA and has already had a consultation meeting with the police personnel and medical officials of all four districts regarding POCSO Act 2012 on 19 September, 2013.
