GANGTOK, 25 Sept: A team of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights visited the Namchi District Prison on Tuesday to check if the prison has any inmates below the age of 18 years.
A press release issued by the Commission informs that the team led by Chairperson, Manita Pradhan did not find anyone below 18 years of age in the prison. The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has been directed by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to inspect prisons in the state to see whether any children under the age of 18 years were lodged there.
The Chairperson met the SP [Prison], KL Tenzing and also interacted with the prison staff to inquire about the total number of inmates present in the Namchi District Prison. It was informed that there were 93 inmates out of whom 05 are women.
The chairperson also inspected the women’s cell and interacted with the inmates about their food, hygiene, sanitation and other facilities. It was also found that 03 boys were lodged in the prison but were sent to the Juvenile Observation Home after the ossification report revealed that they were below 18 years, the release adds.
The chairperson thereafter visited Asar Education Institute and met Yanzee Pinasa [general secretary]. Illiterate domestic servants are given classes for 03 hours everyday at the institute to motivate them to be literally empowered. Ms Pradhan appreciated the work of the institute and also requested that the health checkup of all the domestic helpers coming to the institute be done and their blood group ascertained for their benefit, the release informs.
The Commission further visited office of the Namchi Municipal Council and had an interaction with Chairman, Vice Chairman and one of the Councilors. She informed them about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 and its importance.
She also talked about the recent State Level Consultation Programme organized by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights wherein stakeholders like Senior Medical Officers, Police and Voluntary Organisations discussed on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.
Ms Pradhan urged the Chairman, Namchi Municipal Council to hold an awareness programme at the district level on the above issue involving all stakeholders for the safeguard and interest of the children in the state, the release adds.
