GANGTOK, 11 Jan [IPR]: Martam Rumtek MLA, Menlom Lepcha inaugurated the newly developed Water Garden at lower Martam in the presence of Minister Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Bhim Dhungel and other officials and staffs of the Tourism and Civil Aviation and Forest, Environment and Wildlife Management Department, Government of Sikkim, today.
The project was carried out at an estimated cost of Rs 86 lakh funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and implemented by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Government of Sikkim.
While presenting a brief report of the project, Chief Engineer, Tourism and Civil Aviation, RD Bhutia informed that the work had commenced in 2010 and was completed last year. The project consists of remodelled swimming pool with filtration unit, children’s swimming pool, remodelled Gazebo, entire garden fencing of knitted GI wire with ankle iron and redesigned footpath.
In his brief address, Menlom Lepcha who was the chief guest on the occasion, expressed his gratitude to the Tourism Department for the development of the Water Garden which was destroyed by the 18 September earthquake last year. He also added that the remodelled swimming pool with filtration unit has been developed for the people and asked the department for proper maintenance as well. The chief guest also expressed the need for a trained swimming instructor for further guidance and support.
The Minister for Tourism stated that the project which is located near the capital has been developed by the Tourism Department. Modern techniques have also been applied in the construction of the swimming pool thereby making it a hygienic one.
The Minister suggested that a concrete wall should be constructed on the road side to protect it from dust and planting flowering plants in the Garden. He also informed about another swimming pool which is being developed at Majhitar, South Sikkim.
Later the handing and taking over of the assets between Tourism and Civil Aviation and Forest, Environment and Wildlife Management also took place.
A state of art swimming pool is good news. Courtesy demands late Naren Rai, Landscape Architect cum Forester ( trained in Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh) who conceptualized and got the Water Garden established way back in 1988 find some mention.
