Chamling urges party youth to be more aware and active

JORETHANG, 04 Mar: The ruling Sikkim Democratic Front celebrated its 20th foundation day in grand manner here at the border town of South Sikkim. This two-day celebration kicked off on Saturday with a party youth convention presided over by the party president, Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Chamling contended that a “certain group” from Sikkim has been in touch with extremist groups of North East India, which, he highlighted, posed a serious threat to the prevalent peace and security here. Asking the party youth to check such anti-Sikkimese elements, Mr. Chamling went on to accuse Opposition parties of basing their politics on divisive factors like caste, community and religion.
During the curtain raiser programme of the foundation day celebration, he also openly commented that many people within the party had double standards and stressed that it was the duty and responsibility of every party youth to keep a check on such people.
In this regard, he also condemned the recent incidents of vehicle torching in the name of politics and said that the youth should be aware of this and stop such anti-social elements before the situation gets out of hand.
He stated that politics should be an instrument of serving the people selflessly and not to threaten or harass the masses. Stressing that politics was a science where knowledge was of primary essence, Mr. Chamling rued that educated and intellectual youth preferred to stay neutral because opposition parties have projected politics as a “dirty game” as a result of which the better minds hesitated from participating actively in politics. Here, he called upon such youth to join the party and lead Sikkim towards a better and cleaner political future.
Addressing the party youth, Mr. Chamling said that, they should develop the habit of making decisions and working in their own capacities instead of waiting for higher ups to make the decisions. Youth should openly oppose anti-social activities to preserve the peace and tranquillity of Sikkim, he said.
Informing that a total of Rs 400 crore has been sanctioned for Sikkim roads and that 15,000 pucca houses will be constructed within the next two years, he urged the party youth to inform the people about such development initiatives brought by the SDF government and also to monitor the quality of the work done.
Stating that youth were the pillars of the party and the state, he stressed that the youth should hence be better informed and motivated to lead the society.
He also urged the youth to grab the opportunities created in the tourism sector as Sikkim was the leading state in the entire country working earnestly towards developing tourism.
Earlier, the youth convention was also addressed by the youth representatives from each district. From West, Ram Kr. Limboo and Padma Devi Sharma addressed the function while Tashi Gyatso Lepcha from North, Phurmith Tamang and Yogen Tamang from South and Chetan Sapkota from East district addressed the gathering.
The youth convention also witnessed a state-level party quiz competition where Yuksom-Tashiding constituency bagged the first position followed by Martam- Lungchok and Rhenock constituency in the second and third positions, respectively. The grand finale of Sur Sangam was the highlight of the evening’s programme.
