Speaker returns from NERCPA meeting, retained as NERCPA vice-prez

GANGTOK, 20 Nov: Speaker Sikkim Legislative Assembly, KT Gyaltsen, is back from the executive committee meeting of the North East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association [NERCPA] held on 15 November at Dispur, Assam.
Mr Gyaltsen, who is also the vice-president of North-East Regional Institute of Parliamentary Studies Training and Research [NERIPSTR], Guwahati, shared his experiences in a press conference held yesterday at the Assembly hall.
He informed that during the meeting, Assam Speaker, Pranab Gogai, was unanimously elected as the NERIPSTR president, the post had been lying vacant for sometime. Mr Gyaltsen has been retained as the vice-president of the association.
He informed that two important resolutions were adopted at the NERCPA meeting. The first resolution adopted at the meeting was to condole the sad demise of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, a recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The meeting paid tribute to Late Dr Hazarika and prayed for the peace of the departed soul and also expressed profound grief to the bereaved family.
The second resolution that the meeting adpoted was to condole the sad demise of all persons, affected by the 18 September earthquake in Sikkim and pray for the peace of the departed souls and also express profound grief to the members of the bereaved families.
The Speaker informed that both the resolutions were also adopted and passed by a meeting of NERIPSTR consisting of all the Speakers, Deputy Speakers, one MP from each of the 8 North Eastern State and all the Secretaries of the Legislatures of the Region.
He further informed that as a gesture of sympathy for the large scale devastation of properties and infrastructure in Sikkim, NERIPSTR resolved to contribute Rs 20 Lakhs to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Likewise, the 14th annual conference of NERCPA proposed by Assam Legislative Assembly is scheduled to be held in the month of February next year at Dispur, Assam.
The Speaker informed that this upcoming meeting has two important agendas; Combating corruption for effective function of Parliamentary Democracy and Progress of Industrialization in North-East Region- New Vistas for Socio-Economic Development.
“The impression of Sikkim is respectable and positive around the country and everyone appreciates the stability of the government, good governance and rapid pace of development and maintenance of peace and law and order in the state,” he shared.
He added that this is the ground reality and the strength of the state and everyone needs to deliver their responsibilities from their respective positions to continue the present position of the state.
The Speaker also congratulated the state machinery under the leadership of the Chief Minister for working hard to bring Sikkim to normalcy and to ensure that the pace of development in the state is not hampered.
SU team visits Namchi Government College, interacts and shares ideas
NAMCHI, 20 Nov: Vice Chancellor, Sikkim University, Prof. Mahendra P. Lama, is on tour of colleges here, interacting with students and faculty members. Yesterday, the VC visited Namchi Government College at Kamrang where he interacted with the students and faculty members in a brief programme organized by SU at the college auditorium.
The programme was also attended by the CoE (I/c), SU, Dr. CB Sunwas, PV Ravi, Principal NGC, MP Thapa, Professors of SU and lecturers and staff members of NGC. Addressing the programme, the VC said that Sikkim University is being designed in such a way so as to make it known for academic excellence and research, for its all inclusive institutional character and a strong instrument of regional development and cross-border integration.
“We do not want to set up the institution only to give out degrees, SU will craft each and every talent of a student. The University is trying to bring in the best practices of academic programmes, teaching methods and curriculum designs both from within and outside India,” he said.
We would like to invite scholars and academics from both India and abroad to participate in this project of building a robust centre of excellence for higher learning in the north-eastern region of India, he further added.
During the programme, Dr. Hament Singh gave a brief presentation on result analysis of SU, Dr. OP Gadde on admission and new courses, Dr. Bimala Singh on gender sensitizing unit (GSU) and anti-ragging policies, Asst. Prof, Dhriti Roy on the University website, Dr. Archana Tiwari on the Winter Sojourn program, Asst. Prof. Sangmo Thendup on museum, presentation on library by Librarian, SU, Dr. Tamal Guha, CoE SU Dr. SK Gueung on University Provinces.
The programme was also addressed by Asst Prof. Dr. Sabstian N, PV Ravi, OSD (Finance and Adm.), Principal Namchi Government College, MP Thapa, Prof. S. Kheral, and Dweep Subba from the student’s forum of NGC.
Earlier, a film on the Oral History of Sikkim, an SU initiative, was also screened. After visiting NGC, the VC, Prof. Lama also visited Loyala College of Education, Namchi where he interacted with the students and faculty members of the college.
