National Education Day celebrated at Mangan Zilla Bhawan

MANGAN, 13 Nov: National Education Day was observed here in the Zilla Bhawan, Mangan, North Sikkim  on 11 November.
The programme started with a rally from the Mangan Sr Sec School via Mangan Bazaar to the Zilla Bhawan wherein officials of the concerned department, MNP Councilor, PK Malu, teachers, SMC members including students of MSSS School participated.
During the programme, the welcome address was given by Joint Director HRDD, S Dadul while Zilla Adhyaksha(N), K Lepcha was present as the chief guest accompanied by the guest of honour, DM(N), TN Kazi.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest informed that, according to the total literacy programme, education is a very essential factor for the development of the State in every sphere of the Government’s education policy. He also extended gratitude towards the concerned department for providing such opportunities to the children of the state.
Likewise, in his address, DM North highlighted the importance of the day as it is the birth anniversary of the first Education Minister of India.
Assistant Director, YN Dulal informed about the Right to Education Act (RTE), which was launched on 26 August 2009 by the Government of India. RTE rule covers children aged from 6yrs to 14yrs and up-to class VIII standard. It is not compulsory to submit admission fees, birth certificate, no screening test and transfer certificate for admission, he informed. Adding that If any teacher is found guilty of not following these rules then they will be charged a fine of Rs.25,000 he further informed that students cannot be expelled from school and teachers are required to complete the syllabus within 1000 hours of schooling period.
Also during the programme, the Culture department, Gangtok presented a NED theme play followed by the message of the Prime Minister read out by the Joint Director, HRDD. The message of the Union HRDD Minister of India was read out by the Deputy Director, RN Singh while BRC Coordinator, Ongmu Bhutia read out the message of the Chief Minister of Sikkim.
