GANGTOK, 04 Nov: Krishi Vigyan Kendra under ICAR Sikkim Centre, Tadong organized a programme on “Field day on upland paddy cultivation” under the project NICRA at ICAR Tadong Farm today, with the objective to impart knowledge about upland paddy cultivation on the principle of ‘learning by doing’ and ‘seeing is believing’, informs a press release.
More than forty rice farmers selected from six different villages participated in this programme.
Inaugurating the programme, the chief guest, Principal Director, Dept. of FS&AD, SK Sinha, appreciated the efforts of ICAR to bring a revolution in rice cultivation through the timely intervention of suitable upland paddy in Sikkim, the release informs.
In his brief address, he highlighted the scenario of rice cultivation in Sikkim with respect to hybrid paddy cultivation, SRI, paddy seed production etc. and urged the ICAR scientists to provide suitable technologies to make the state self sufficient in rice. He expressed his happiness over the performance of upland paddy trials conducted in ICAR Farm and said that the result may be replicated in the field on a large scale through KVKs during the next Kharif season.
On the occasion, the chief guest also released a technical bulletin on “Rain-fed Upland Rice Cultivation Practices in Sikkim” (both in English and Nepali), the release mentions.
Joint Director, ICAR Sikkim Centre, Dr. Jay G. Vasrshney, a weed scientist, gave a brief note on upland paddy cultivation with special emphasis on integrated pest management, disease management and weed management. According to him, introduction of suitable high yielding varieties is not the only solution for enhancing rice productivity, but simultaneously one should take care of the disease and pest management as well as the post harvesting technology.
In her address, the guest of honor, Additional Director, Dept. of FS&AD, and Director, SAMETI, SL Dorjee lauded the efforts of ICAR scientists for their contribution in improving the agriculture production in the state, the release adds. Sharing her field experience, Mrs. Dorjee said that upland paddy is the right intervention in right time under the scenario of climate change.
Additional Director, Dept. of FS&AD, PK Dewan, tabled a detailed report on different schemes launched by the department of FS&AD for the benefit of the farming community. He appreciated ICAR for organizing such field day programme on upland paddy cultivation.
Earlier, Scientist, ICAR Sikkim Centre, Tadong, Sh Chandan Kapoor welcoming to the guests and farmers, highlighted the detailed package of practices of upland paddy taken under varietal performance trial. Extending thanks to all the delegates and the participants Programme Coordinator, KVK, ICAR, Ranipool, Dr. AK Mohanty gave a short account on the significance of field day programme giving emphasis on upland paddy cultivation as a climate resilient technology. He cited the possibilities of taking three crops per unit of land per year (upland paddy-toria/vegetables/pulses-maize) which may increase the cropping intensity to the extent of 300 %, the release further informs.
The field day programme on upland paddy completed successfully with a field visit-cum-demonstration programme coordinated by Scientist, Dr. Chandan Kapoor, SMS plant breeding, Dr J.K. Singh, Tech. Officer, Sh. S. M. Kandwal and Farm Manager, Sh. S. Verma.
