MANGAN, 30 Oct: The state is yet to receive the full amount of Rs. 1,000 crore promised by the Centre as earthquake relief, with only Rs. 50 crore received this far, the Chief Minister informed while addressing people during his stopover at Lachung as part of his North Sikkim tour, adding that the State has already spent Rs. 100 crore in relief compensation alone thus far.
Elaborating further, the Chief Minister said that the Rs. 1000 crores assured as central assistance would be in the form of rebuilding, reconstruction and restoration projects. Also while at Lachung, as part of his north Sikkim tour, it was emphasised by the CM that the state government has provided more compensation than central government norms.
Reassuring the people at Lachung, he said that those whose buildings have totally collapsed, will be provided with the low interest rate loan by the government for the construction of their houses.
While at Lachung Monastery the CM was handed over a petition of demands by the monks concerning the monastery and it was assured by him that all demands would be sanctioned. The Lachung Pipon also highlighted various demands of the people of Lachung during the visit. The Chief Minister sanctioned the various demands of the people here informing the people that the DPRs for the projects would be prepared within one month.
The Chief Minister also sanctioned the construction of permanent food godown at Lachung where he directed the concerned department to prepare the DPR as soon as possible. He also said that he will take up the matter with the centre regarding the land attestation in the area. He also sanctioned the construction of school building at Bitchu along with the play ground. As regards other demands such as fencing, drinking water supply, protection wall etc. the CM directed the concerned head of the department to prepare the respective DPRs.
Appealing to the people of Lachung, he asked them to protect the beauty and biodiversity of Lachung and also encouraged the people to take up trout fish farming in the area which would boost tourism. The chief minister elaborated that tourism in Lachung could be upgraded and classified as snow-based tourism, flower based and summer based tourism.
The CM’s entourage visited various damaged areas especially the houses at Phakey where six houses were totally damaged by the earthquake.
