GANGTOK, 14 Nov: Commission for Protection of Child Rights visited a number of institutions catering to children around Tadong on 10 November, informs an official press release.
Chairperson Manita Pradhan, along with members Yangchen Ladingpa and Nim Choki Bhutia first visited Balika Niketan at 5th mile Tadong.
Balika Niketan is run by an NGO and gets substantial amount of grant from the Government of Sikkim. The commission interacted in detail with the in-charge, Krishna Pradhan and Assistant in-charge, Babari Chettri regarding the welfare, health care, hygiene and personality and also career building of the girls.
The commission also visited a Creche Centre at 6th Mile Tadong which caters to 25 children from the surrounding areas and also visited the ICDS centre enquiring about the functioning and curriculum of the centre where they interacted with the children, the release informs. Though ICDS centres cater to children upto 6 years only, the Commission found that some children over this age who should be in elementary schools were also at the centre.
According to the release the commission briefed the Anganwadi Workers regarding pro-children schemes and programmes of the State Government for the welfare of the children and not a single child should be deprived of such welfare schemes and education they informed. The Commission also directed the Anganwadi workers to ensure that every child in the centre should have a birth certificate which will enable them to get admission in elementary school.
The Commission finally, visited the State Level Aganwadi Workers Training Centre at Lower Syari and had a detailed interaction with the trainees of the Centre. The principal briefed the commission regarding all the projects and programmes of the centre.
ICDS centres in Sikkim translate their learning into practice since these trainees will be later preparing pre-school children by teaching them how to read, write and learn basic things which lays the foundation of their childhood education and health care. The commission feels this training centre has a vital role to play taking into consideration the welfare of the large number of children who reside in every nook and corner of Sikkim, the release further mentions.
