Update: Supply of essential commodities to earthquake affected areas

GANGTOK, 19 Oct: Since the earthquake, the Food and Civil Supplies Department has provided 1549.62 quintals of rice, 154.97 quintals of dal, 21.5 quintals of atta, 22.91 quintals of salt, 53.01 quintals of mustard oil and 2040 quintals of SK Oil to the North District.
In the South, 35 quintals of rice, 1.92 quintals of dal, 5.40 quintals of atta, 0.99 quintals of salt, 1.26 quintals of mustard oil and 315 quintals of SK Oil have been supplied. In the West District, 183.5 quintals of rice, 4.75 quintals of dal, 0.23 quintals of salt, 4.33 quintals of mustard oil have been supplied so far, where in East, only single item, 108 quintals of rice have been provided. 
47 sorties from Mangan and 42 sorties of Defence Choppers and choppers of companies from Libing Helipad and 3 sorties by Pawan Hans from Burtuk were used to send these commodities to North District, informs a release issued by the department secretary.  
The release also informs that of the 27 food godowns, 21 have been damaged due to the earthquake. The department has submitted estimates of the Relief Commissioner for funds to construct 3 new godowns and for major and minor repairs. The department will start the repair works as soon as the funds are made available, informs the release.
The department has expressed that the army was kind enough to allow the department to use 2000 ltrs. of SK Oils from the Army Reserve at Chungthang to be distributed to the affected people in Chungthang Sub division area and has further expressed that the department will replenish it when it receives the actual amount that has been distributed for the relief work.
The release adds that since the refilled LPG cylinders were made available by IOCL after the earthquake, there was no shortage of refilled LPG cylinders even in the worst affected areas in the North.
M/s Rangeet Association Pvt. Ltd, the nominee of the department for lifting and grinding of wheat to whole meal atta for distribution under the Public Distribution System, donated candles, matches, torch lights along with batteries to the affected areas of Lachung and Lachen, informs the release further.
