GANGTOK, 16 Oct: The Dharmadeshna Samaroh, commemorating the 55th anniversary of the first ever mass conversion of about 3-4 lakh people to Buddhism in Nagpur by Dr BR Ambedkar in 1956, is being observed at the national level by the Buddhist Society of India which was founded by Dr Ambedkar, informs a press release.
It was on this day that lakhs of people took refuge in the Buddha dharma that later became the nucleus to the revival and growth of Buddhism in India, the place of its origin, the release mentions. During today’s main function held at Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Bhawan in Nagpur, Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje presided as the chief guest.
In his discourse, he spoke on the contribution of Baba Saheb in rejuvenating Buddhism in India. During the function, he was also presented with the International Sakyamuni Award by the Ashwagosha Buddhists Foundation, the release informs.
Earlier, Trinley Thaye Dorje was given a warm welcome at the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Airport and driven straight to the city’s historic Dhiksa Bhawan where the 1956 ‘dharma-pravatana’ took place. He offered Khadas and prayers before the statues of Buddha Sakyamuni and Baba Saheb Ambedkar amid chanting of prayers by the monks and lay devotees there.
He was also conferred with the title of Dhammadut for his service to spearhead the words and message of Lord Buddha in India by the Buddhist Society of India, the release adds.
Thaye Dorje is currently on a two-day visit to Nagpur in Maharashtra and is scheduled to return to New Delhi on 17 Oct.
