GANGTOK, 10 Oct: Helping Hands Sikkim, an organisation formed on 23 September consisting of 39 NGOs, has to reached relief materials, provided medical aid and also helped in rescue works to almost all parts of Chungthang, Lachen, Lachung and Dzongu, informed the organisation’s president Paljor Lachungpa while speaking to the media today.
“With the help of the State government and the Army helicopters, we were able to provide and air drop the relief materials, ration and medicines to most of the affected villages of North Sikkim,” he said and added that where it was not possible for the helicopters to reach, two relief teams of mountaineering experts led by Kazi Sherpa and Hiren Gurung were dispatched to reach the necessary relief materials.
“Every day, two truck-loads of relief materials [mostly ration] from the Food & Civil Supplies Department, along with other relief materials provided by the 162 donors used to be on standby at the army and State government helipads to be airlifted to North Sikkim and thus we were able to reach the relief materials on a need to basis to the respective affected villages in time,” Mr. Lachungpa informs.
Where the bigger helicopters could not land, the smaller army choppers [Cheetah] were used to air drop or reach relief materials, especially the remote areas of Dzongu. While Chungthang is accessable via a tunnel at Shipgyer, Lachen will take some more time to reach, and Lachung is still not accessable as the road is littered with multiple slides, so relief materials can be sent only through helicopters, he added.
We are working on a daily coordination basis at the district level and are in contact with Karma Zigdel, the Mangan Nagar Panchayat, who informs us of the requirements on a need basis and at which all places the relief materials are required and then we dispatch the necessary aid, he informed.
Medical teams along with medical treatments have also been provided to the people and enough rations, medicines and other necessary relief materials have also been left behind so that there is no shortage, he added, highlighting that after the relief work the next step will be to begin longterm rehabilitation in coordination with the State government.
Helping Hands Sikkim has also provided relief and relief materials in various places of East District, Rinchenpong constituency in West and Daramdin in South.
Kailash Agarwal [general secretary] and Ashok Sarda [treasurer] of Helping Hands Sikkim also addressed the press briefing.
