GANGTOK, 30 Sept: The Health Department today released details of the tasks undertaken since the 18 Sept earthquake.
According to a press release forwarded by the IRP Department, NDMRF, New Delhi, visited the relief camp at Merung where 16 households were taking shelter. 26 patients were examined and 1 injury case was treated at STNM Hospital while other systematic diseases were reported with no cases of diarrhea. “IEC was given and 4000 halogen tablets distributed”.
No diarrhea case has been reported from the relief camp at Paljor Stadium where 18 families are taking shelter, where as well, awareness sessions were held on water-borne diseases and 4000 halogen tablets distributed as it was done at every other location visited.
At Lumsey Jr High School, 100 people are taking shelter of whom 8 people were suffering from diarrhea and 37 from other ailments. They were treated and given medicine.
At the SPWD camp, 214 people were taking shelter no diarrhea case was reported.
The release informs that a team of 5 senior doctors from the National Institute of Communicable Disease, New Delhi and All Indian Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Kolkata visited North District from 24 to 29 Sept.
The team visited Mangan, Chungthang, Dzongu and Phodong to evaluate any epidemic, educate general public regarding safe drinking water and food hygiene.
They distributed 90,000 Halogen tablets to make drinking water safe. The team demonstrated the use of Chloroscope, which is designed to measure chlorine content of safe drinking water (residual chlorine).
The team has been deployed to cover East, South and West District for similar preventive activities from 30 Sept.
Two teams of doctors and paramedics are visiting all the relief camps in and around Gangtok under the overall charge of Mission Director (NRHM), Dr. L. Doma, the release further mentions. Similar visits are being undertaken by District Health Authorities to cover all relief camps.
Two psychiatrists from NIMHANS Bangalore accompanied by M.D. (Psychiatry) of STNM Hospital, Dr Bhusan Dahal, have been sent to Mangan to counsel earthquake affected persons. Three psychiatrists from NIMHANS have been stationed at STNM Hospital.
The multi-sectoral Central Government team led by S. Singh to assess damage caused by earthquake has visited District Hospital Mangan, Singtam and Health Secretariat for assessing damage caused to Health infrastructure on 27 and 28 September.
Two doctors each have been sent to Lachung and Lachen to provide medicines and medicare to the locals there, the release adds.
