Field staff trained on Socio-Economic and Caste Census 2011 in Namchi

NAMCHI, 21 Oct: A two-day training for Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) is being organized by the Block Administrative Office, Namchi in collaboration with the Census Office, Gangtok at the conference hall of BAC Namchi.
More than 50 trainees consisting of RDA, PEA, FF and office staff were trained in conducting the census under Namchi Municipal Council, Jorethang Nagar Panchayat and Namthang, Sumbok and Sikip blocks.
The Census Officer, Government of India, Pankaj Kumar was the master trainer of the training programme while it was also attended by Census Officer, Gangtok, Tuffan Gazmere and Panchayat Inspector, Namchi BAC, Pema Wangchuk Bhutia.
During the training programme master trainer Pankaj Kumar informed that the Socio-economic and Caste Census 2011 is being conducted by the government of India to generate information on a large number of social and economic indicators relating to households across the country for which the training is being organized.
The survey is being carried out by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India which will estimate caste-wise population in the country and identify households living below the poverty line. The survey in Sikkim will commence from 02 November and will be carried out through comprehensive door-to-door enumeration in both rural and urban areas.
The entire exercise will be paperless, done on handheld electronic devices. Collected data will be verified by the Panchayats and subject to public scrutiny at the Gram Sabha level where claims
and objectives will be recorded and dealt with.
He further informed that the census of 2011 will have three important outcomes, firstly, the SECC, 2011 will rank households based on their socio-economic status so that the State/Union Territory Governments can objectively prepare a list of families living below the poverty line in rural and urban areas.
Secondly, it will make available authentic information on the caste-wise break-up of population in the country. Lastly, it will provide the socio-economic profile of various castes.
