Collaborative efforts sustain relief camp and measures at Toong-Naga GPU

FRESH CONSIGNMENT OF ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES HANDED OVERMANGAN, 10 OCT: The earthquake relief camp at Naga in North Sikkim, which has been running since the midnight of 18 September at the Multi-Purpose playground there, was provided a fresh consignment of essential supplies yesterday.
This relief camp, as mentioned, came together hours after the earthquake which devastated the area and has been providing shelter, medical aid and provisions to affected people gathered here from the Toong-Naga GPU. Also finding shelter and assistance here are people moving onwards to Chungthang, Saffo, Shipgyer, Lachen, Lachung, Thangu, Damang and Ramom.
The relief camp is a collaborative initiative taken up under the supervision of Panchayat Secretary Dorjee Tak Lepcha, SDF’s North district president NT Lepcha, Health Department (PHSC), JAT regiment, Panchayat members of the area and local residents.
This relief camp stands at the very entry point to the earthquake ravaged areas of the district further north, being for a while, the point till where the North Sikkim Highway was open. The people of the area have shown remarkable resolve and displayed proactive assistance in supporting and counselling people fleeing from areas like Chungthang, Lachen and Lachung and arranging for their safe evacuation to Mangan.
On Monday, World Vision-India and JA Campo distributed essential commodities for the affected people of Toong-Naga GPU. A total of 295 affected people were each provided 25kgs of rice, 3kgs musur dal, 3kgs soyabean, 2kgs mustard oil, 2kgs sugar, 2kg salt, 1kg tea leaves.
Meanwhile, Delhi-based Otsuka Chemical’s translator-cum-chemist, Sanu Tamang, provided glucose water supplements.
The relief distribution was held in the presence of the area Panchayats.
A total 23 NGOs are working on relief and rehabilitation efforts in North Sikkim. These are: ECOSS, VHAS, WWF, Sai Samiti Sikkim, SBFP (JICA Project Team), SLYA, Sikkim University, All India Lepcha Literary Development Organization, Task Force team, Sikkim Doctors Association, Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology, Sikkim Legal Aid Association of Gangtok, KCC of Yuksom, ATREE, Tashiding Welfare Association, Passingdang Society, MLAS of Dzongu, Upper Singhik Samaj, NYK, Sikkim Youth of Mangan, World Vision India, National Child Care Organization and a team of doctors from the Mountaineering Group of Kolkata.
