GANGTOK, 14 Oct: The decision on the construction of the super specialty hospital coming up at Sokeythang, East Sikkim has now been put on hold with the Chief Minister deciding to get the consensus of the public before going ahead with the construction.
While the Chief Minister had earlier made it clear that whether buildings above three and a half stories should be constructed or not would be decided after collating public opinion, officials inform that now the Chief Minister has decided to seek people’s opinion on the construction of the super specialty hospital as well.
This is because the earlier decision of the government to construct a 575-bedded hospital at Sokeythang had been altered to construct a 1000 bedded hospital instead. The Cabinet had passed the proposal put up by the Health Department to increase the capacity of the hospital from 575 to 1000 some months ago. This, it is informed, entailed increase in the number of stories of the hospital building. However, on account of the massive damage to structures in the 18 September earthquake, there has been a change in the policy of the government to go in for public consensus first rather than proceed straightaway with prepared plans.
