105 SCHOOL BUILDINGS LOST TO 18 SEPT EARTHQUAKEGANGTOK, 14 Oct: The Chief Minister had directed that all damaged schools be repaired and alternate accommodation arranged for schools that had collapsed before the Dasain holidays ended so that children could start going to school on the scheduled reopening from 10 October. Almost all the schools reopened after the holidays barring a few in North Sikkim.
“Six schools [Salim Pakyel Junior High School, Sarchok JHS, Bob Primary School, Munsithang PS, Sakyong PS and Pentong PS] in North Sikkim have not reopened as of now because of rehabilitation camps that are being run in these schools. At present, these schools also lack proper approach roads,” informed Secretary, Human Resource Development Department [HRDD], CS Rao, while speaking to NOW! today.
Almost all the schools [government and private] in the State have begun classes, except the six in North Sikkim, where classes are scheduled to resume from next Monday onwards, he added.
“Wherever there were minor damages to the school buildings, they were immediately repaired during the holidays so that classes could resume, but where there was major damage and the school building not fit for resumption of classes, we have constructed temporary classrooms for now depending upon the space available near the schools,” the HRDD Secretary stated.
“Sichey Secondary School had also sustained major damages because of the 18 September earthquake and the 1,065 students of the school needed an alternate space, but since there was no space to erect another temporary structure near the school campus, we had to take the nearby accomodations on rent to start classes”, he said, adding that classes began with three shifts and are now being held in two shifts.
A total of 105 schools have totally collapsed due to the earthquake and new constructions have to be taken up, for which a detailed project report will be submitted to the State government as soon as possible, he informs.
