GANGTOK, 28 Sept: A major disaster was averted because of the prompt response of the Fire and Emergency Services here last night when a fire broke out in a residential building at Chandmari, a little ahead of the Forest Checkpost.
“We received a call at around 1.20 a.m. that a fire had broken out in a six storied building at Chandmari. Three fire tenders led by SSO Phurchung Lepcha were immediately dispatched to bring the fire under control,” informs DB Chettri [Additional Superintendent of Police, Fire & Emegrency Services].
“The fire had started in the top floor of the building which was a wooden structure being used for residential purposes. Fortunately, there was no one there when the fire broke out,” he said and added that unfortunately a pet dog died due to aphixication as it was tied and kept near the room.
It was quite a major fire and had it not been brought under control by the firemen, it could have spread to buildings nearby. The fire tenders brought the fire under control in a span of half an hour using the terrace of the nearby building to douse the flames.
The building belongs to Dichen Ongmu Bhutia, but she was not home at the time of the fire. The family has been staying with relatives since the earthquake of 18 September.
The reason for the fire was a short circuit in the kitchen, informs the Additional SP.
He has also advised people to check gas connections, wires and other electrical appliances in their respective homes as they might have become loose or faulty after the massive earthquake of 18 September.
