Peddlers busted despite cunning deceptions to hide contraband

GANGTOK, 14 Sept: Two people were arrested and one vehicle seized by the Sadar Police after persistent search uncovered the cunning deceptions devised by the two to hide the contraband in unrelated incidents. A substantial amount of much abused prescription drugs were recovered in the busts and the cops alerted to innovative deceits being used by peddlers to slip under the radar.
Acting on a tip-off, the Sadar Police raided the rented accommodation of one Kiran Thapa [24] at Bhojoghari at around 2.30 in the afternoon yesterday. An exhaustive search of his quarter came up empty initially. The raiding party was however convinced of the authenticity of their information and persisted. It was then that one of the personnel picked up a stuffed toy [a teddy bear in pic alongside] which was still neatly ensconced in its plastic wrapping.
Sure enough, this was decoy. The stuffing inside the teddy bear was made up of substances of abuse. The raiding party recovered 601 capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon, 14 Nitrosun-10 tablets and five bottles of Recodex cough syrup hidden inside the teddy bear. A Samsung mobile phone handset and Rs. 1,280 in cash were also among the stuffing. This phone, it is suspected, was used exclusively for peddling contacts since Kiran Thapa, who is originally hails from Teesta bazaar in West Bengal, carried another phone for regular use.
In another incident yesterday, acting on source information again, a Sadar Police team lay in wait to intercept a contraband consignment at the Convoy Ground in Tadong last night.
Shortly past midnight, at around 12.30 a.m, Chandra, alias Mama [36], driver of a Tata Sumo [SK-04-3195] was stopped and his vehicle searched. Again, the cops found nothing suspicious, initially.
Then, as one of the cops climbed up to the roof and checked the spare tyre kept there, his hands pulled out a huge consignment. Out of the spare tyre rolled out 1,440 Spasmo Proxyvon capsules, 200 Nitrosun-10 tablets, 19 bottles of Recodex cough syrup, few dendrite packets and five pouches of Marijuana [Ganja].
Chandra, a resident of Panitanki, Darjeeling, residing here near the District Court was taken into cutodt and his vehicle seized.
Kiran Thapa and Chandra were suspected drug peddlers that the cops had been keeping an eye out for a while now, informs PI Tshering Sherpa, Officer In-charge of the Sadar Police Station.
