1,075 houses destroyed in North Sikkim, projects preliminary report on earthquake damage

MANGAN, 26 Sept: As per a preliminary report prepared by the North District administration, the 18 September earthquake, which claimed 41 lives in the district, has completely damaged 432 RCC buildings and 643 kutcha houses in the district. Meanwhile, 2,965 RCC buildings have registered major damage along with 5,398 kutcha houses. The earthquake also delivered a strong blow to the livestock in the district, killing 2,209 animals [Cows-307, Goats-210, Bulls-232, Pigs-250, Yaks-410, Sheep-800].
With North Sikkim being the worst affected district, 231 vehicles [bus, trucks, taxis and government vehicles] are being utilized for transportation by the district administration, it is informed.
These projections and discussions on relief and rescue measures were taken up at a coordination meeting held at the District Control Room-Mangan today.
The meeting which was chaired by CT Wangdi, Secretary, Labour Department, who has been appointed Secretary in-charge of the relief and rescue operations in the district, and Director, HRDD, TN Kazi, who has been designated the Disaster Management Officer, North Sikkim.
The meeting decided that the DM (North) collect daily reports from all entire line departments and submit it to the Chief Secretary and other concerned Heads of Departments to ensure better coordination.
Mr. Kazi directed that details of all relief camps be maintained properly and regular updates taken to ensure that these camps were well supplied and equipped to handle all exigencies.
The meeting was attended by officials from all line departments, District Administration, Police Department and NGOs.
