GANGTOK, 28 Aug: The All Sikkim Educated Self-Employed & Unemployed Association [ASESE&UA] has appealed to the State Government to concentrate on addressing the “real issues” of the state instead of continuing to defend the Public Order Bill.
The association has argued that the level of political debate in the state needs to be improved by bringing up productive and useful Bills. Addressing a press conference yesterday, the ASESE&UA president, Nawin Kiran, said that the issues like the dilution of Sikkim’s old laws, increasing disparity between the rich and the poor, unemployment, drug abuse, increasing corruption etc were the real issues of the state and need to be addressed immediately.
He further suggested that the political parties in the state move forward with productive policies and not take recourse to personal attacks as they so often do. Then, the people will support them, he said.
The Association also questioned why, when the government has already withdrawn the Public Order Bill the party issuing statements in defence of the Bill.
“This was an anti-people bill and was criticized all over the country and even the Governor adviced the government to withdraw the Bill,” he pointed out.
On withdrawal of the Bill, the Association congratulated the political parties, organizations and general public for their support in opposing the Bill.
Mr Kiran mentioned that the Association’s stand was consistently against the Bill, but due to statements in support of the Bill by an association having a similar name, the people had been confused.
The press conference was also addressed by the chief legal advisor ASESE&UA, Zigmi Wangchuk Bhutia, publicity secretary, Khagendra Dhakal and general secretary, Ritesh Rai.
