TSETEN TASHI MEMORIAL AWARD TO BE INSTITUTED FOR WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY IN AUGUST
GANGTOK, 04 July: Former Secretary to the Government of Sikkim, Kiran Rasaily, has announced plans to start an educational institution with special focus on teaching children the different art forms. Vivid Kala Academy Sikkim [VIKAS], is scheduled to begin in Sikkim with the next academic session in February 2012. This school will offer classes in fine arts, photography, cinematography, visual arts, music and other forms of creative expression.
Addressing a press conference today, Mr Rasaily informed that VIKAS will be an educational institution from class III to VIII with preference the art forms being given priority in the learning process to provide good foundation to the children.
He informed that the institution will help “discover the aptitude of the students and hone their talents and skills further in their respective fields”.
This form of education, he pointed out, will be a first of its kind in the state.
As a first initiative before formally launching the school next year, VIKAS is organizing a week-long celebration of the World Photography Day in August. The World Photography Day falls on 19 August.
Mr Rasaily informed that this celebration will also be a first for Sikkim seeking to cater to photography lovers, hobby photographers, emerging photographers, full time photographers, commercial photographers and photo journalists.
During the celebration, photographers from Sikkim, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and other parts of the country will display their works at photo exhibition’s to be mounted on different categories.
These categories all include nature and environment, landscapes, people including children, wildlife, flora and fauna, fashion photography, festivals and celebration etc.
The week-long celebration will also include a workshop, discussions, field trips, slide shows, film shows and other activities by invited experts from different parts of the country.
Mr Rasaily informs that the VIKAS also plans to organize similar activities simultaneously in other district headquarters as well as on miniature way to celebrate the WPD.
“Sikkim had great photographers like the late Tseten Tashi and our history speaks of many other gifted artists and we are trying to highlight such photographers of the state,” he said. He informed that the Late Tseten Tashi Memorial Award has also been instituted for the celebration.
