GANGTOK, 25 July: “Easy access of gadgets like cell phones can hamper their studies.” This was one of the outcomes in the “triangular meeting” held today between teachers, parents and School Managing Committee of Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Deorali.
The distraction, combined with the unhealthy disinterest in preparing for exams because of the ‘no detention’ Policy were proving damaging for the students and required the concerned involvement of parents to confront.
Addressing the meeting, the recently appointed Principal, Sashi Lata Chettri highlighted that the primary level students need not to be sent to tuition as the different teaching methods at school and tuition class was confusing the kids.
“This is the reason why students even though they do well in tuition are unable to write in the classrooms,” she said, adding that simple revision at home of what was studied in the school was enough to learn well.
Ms. Chettri further said that tuition teachers are solving the home work of the students making the students fully dependent, which will definitely hamper in their future learning.
She also announced that henceforth, students from Class I to VIII must return their textbooks in good condition to the school at the end of the academic session.
“We are establishing a book bank in the school and these returned books will be distributed to the new students, which will remit off the hindrances caused by delay in the supply of textbooks,” she said.
She warned that the final progress report will not be handed over to the students until they return the textbooks.
The Principal also informed that students as well as some of the parents were in some mis-conception regarding the new ‘No-detention Policy.
“This Policy does not mean that the school cannot fail students. If a student performs extremely poorly in the examinations, she will be detained in the same class and will be required to clear the back papers to secure a seat in the next class,” she warned.
The Principal received a huge applause from the well-attended meeting, when she announced that this year, the school achieved 100% pass percentage in Class X and 92% in Class XII board examinations.
Similarly, teachers of various subjects highlighted the problems facing by them in the classroom and placed various suggestions with the parents to sort it jointly.
The SMC members informed that students have to go through several competitions, so parents too needed to be more responsible to achieve the goals.
Finally, representatives of the parents urged the school to help the students in preparing projects by providing access to Internet in their computer classes. As per the CBSE norms, students have to submit the project work compulsorily.
Regarding this, the Principal said that at present, the school is having some problems due to shortage of computers but said that the suggestion will be taken on priority.
