SDF supports strong Lokpal Bill and seeks wider consultations

GANGTOK, 04 July: Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim, PD Rai, and Rajya Sabha MP, OT Lepcha, yesterday represented Sikkim Democratic Front at the all-party meeting on the Lokpal Bill held at the official residence of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in New Delhi.
During the deliberations participated in by Congress, BJP, CPM and regional parties, the Sikkim MPs also presented the stand of the SDF party on the proposed Lokpal Bill.

The SDF has conveyed that the Parliament and Government of India have to respond to the wishes of the people so far as the passing of a strong and effective Lokpal Bill is concerned, Mr. Rai informs.
The two MPs also told the all-party meeting that the institution of the Prime Minister should not be under the purview of the proposed Lokpal Bill.
“We said that the Centre should take concurrence of respective State governments on aspects of the Lokpal Bill and that the Bill should be brought in accordance to the set practices of the Parliament. This means drafting and introduction in the Parliament and then referred to the Parliamentary standing committee which scrutinizes it,” Mr. Rai detailed.
The MPs were also of the view that wider consultations should be held on the proposed bill and deliberations not restricted to a select set of people as it has been the case thus far.

  1. I agree with MP's views about seeking wider consultations amongst the stakeholders, also I feel every state should be entitled to have their own mechanisms to tackle issues of corruption within the framework of the Lokpal Bill. There has to be a proper documentation of the online forums where suggestions, views and apprehensions as well are being poured in by millions.
