Allow no compromises on quality or commitments, CM urges people

SAGAR CHHETRI
RANGPO, 20 July: Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today stressed that infrastructure development and the creation of new opportunities were being prioritized by the State Government because these created new avenues and options for the people to develop collectively. It was for this reason that the focus has been on quality works and frequent directions issued to industrial and hydel project developers to employ local personnel and deliver on their corporate social responsibility towards the resident population. The Chief Minister continued his village-to-village tour of the State into its 28th day with interactions with the people of Khamdong-Singtam and West-Pendam constituencies.

He also urged the people to take their responsibilities towards the state seriously and set aside selfish interests to invest full commitment to the development process here.
Before driving into the GFPF unit, his first official halt for the day, the CM inspected the damage caused to a three-storied building at Chisopani [near GFPF] due to soil failure triggered by back-cutting works undertaken on NH31A by GREF.
The CM dismissed the protective works undertaken by GREF as inferior. Such compromises were imperiling private and public property, he highlighted, while adding that the State Government has taken up this incident for serious follow-up with GREF officials. The Chief Secretary, he informed, was meeting with GREF Chief Engineer to discuss the matter. “I will also take this matter to the Central Government and seek justice for the affected people,” he said.
If suitable action is not taken by GREF in this regard, then the government will have no choice but to approach the courts in public interest, he added.
The six families residing in this building were moved into the Marwari Dharamsala on 13 July, when the extension works on the road below started pulling at its foundation. The building has been rendered too unstable for them to move back in.
Addressing the students directly, he reminded them of the primacy of knowledge, technology and information in the present times and appealed that they never slacken in the process of learning. Detailing the various schemes and projects now in place to facilitate education, he urged the students to learn well and develop a competitive and responsible edge.
He also rued the fact that some teachers have been ignoring their responsibilities towards the students by lobbying for political camps. Inviting such teachers to quit their jobs and enter politics openly, he added that their slogan for “change” was running hollow because it was ignoring the most important aspect of change- a change for the better.
The people at large, he said, were forthcoming with emotional support for his governance; what was required for the next generation of development, he added, was involved participation and constructive criticism. This was necessary, he said, because the political opposition in the State had failed the people by remaining fixated on personal pursuits and self-centered priorities.
At his second halt, at Singtam Lall Bazaar, the CM announced that upgradation and beautification works along with infrastructural development were being finalized for Singtam Bazaar. He announced that the Singtam Lall Bazaar will be remodeled into a proper shopping complex, complete with a children’s park and an open-air theatre.
He also announced science stream will be introduced at Singtam Senior Secondary School and that a multi-storied car park constructed at Singtam Bazaar.
At his third halt at Majhitar, the CM mentioned that negative forces, masquerading as political parties, NGOs and social organizations were trying to mislead the people and urged the civil society to keep the people better informed.
At his last halt at Rangpo Bazaar, the CM urged the business community here to become emotionally integrated with the land and assist the mission to develop Sikkim into a model State.
