SU organizes workshop on gender sensitization

GANGTOK, 20 June: A two-day workshop on gender sensitization was organized by the Gender Sensitisation Unit (GSU) of Sikkim University on 11 and 12 June at the Library Seminar Hall of the university here, a press release informs.
The workshop was organized to “create sensitivity and awareness regarding sexual harassment, intimidation, discrimination or exploitation” in the work place, the release explains.
The resource persons for the workshop were Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Civil Judge, East and North Sikkim, Prajwal Khatiwada, and Advocate, Dr Doma Bhutia. Member Secretary, GSU Dr Bimala Singh, gave an introduction to the Gender Sensitisation Unit.

A legal discourse on ‘Legal aspects including women rights’ was given by Mr Khatiwada which focused mainly on constitutional provisions which guarantee the rights and protection to women, domestic violence and dowry related offences, and property laws, the release informs.
Dr Bhutia, in turn, deliberated on sexual harassment at the workplace, highlighting the “Vishaka Guidelines” laid down by the Supreme Court of India in dealing with cases pertaining to sexual harassment, followed by the screening of a documentary film on the same, the release adds.
The workshop concluded with an interactive session among the participants and resource persons.
The participants for the workshop on 11 June were students of Sikkim University while on 12 June, all faculty, management and support staff members of the University along with the GSU college unit representatives from all affiliated colleges of Sikkim University were present, the release further mentions.
