Rescued tortoise rehabilitated to Kitam Bird Sanctuary
GANGTOK, 01 May: The tortoise rescued from Chalamthang above Rhenock, East Sikkim, has been relocated to the Kitam Bird Sanctuary in South Sikkim, Forest Department officials confirmed today.
On 27 May last Friday, a Chalampong resident, Mani Kumar Pradhan, had rescued a tortoise and handed it over to ACF [Wildlife, Rongli Sub-Division], Pralad Pradhan, for rehabilitation.
The ACF informs that the department has confirmed the species as Indotesduno elongate, an endangered species and that his office has learned about the rescue from one Bhusan Adhikari on the same day. After that, the tortoise was handed over to the department and taken to Kitam Bird Sanctuary on 28 May as per the directions of CCF, Wildlife, Gut Lepcha.
The tortoise which bears a yellowish color weighs around 3.5 to 4 Kg. The species is found in Nepal, Bangladesh, Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and Singhbhum in Bihar, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, W Malaysia, S China. How it arrived in Rhenock is yet to be established.
