Hemakarna and Sancharani Subba Memorial Trust awards scholarships

SORENG, 16 June: In order to improve the education standard in the area and encourage students, Hemakarna and Sancharani Subba Memorial Trust, Soreng organized an awards ceremony today at the Soreng Senior Secondary School, Soreng, West Sikkim.
This is the 7th year that the trust has been awarding the top-ranked students of Government schools in Soreng-Chakung and two schools of Daramdin constituency. To mark the occasion a grand function was organized today with the area MLA, Roads & Bridges Minister RB Subba as the chief guest accompanied by SDM Soreng Sub Division, Aiswarya Singh as special guest.

While introducing the Hemakarna and Sancharani Memorial Trust, Headmaster Dodak Secondary School, Dinesh Pega informed that the late parents of the chief patron of the trust, RB Subba, legal advisor to the Chief Minister, had always felt strongly about equal opportunities in education for all sections of the society in their lifetime. The trust was established in their memory in the year 2006 with their son RB Subba as the Chief Patron and has been continuously providing scholarships to top ranked students of Class X and organising debate competitions for students of various government schools of Soreng-Chakung and Daramdin constituencies in West Sikkim.
He informed that in 2006 it was awarded to Jigmee Dorjee Tamang of Soreng Sr. Secondary School, Prajwal Thapa of Soreng SSS in 2007, Nilesh Gurung of Dodak SS in 2008, Sisir Chettri of Dodok SS in 2009, Dinesh Subba of Timburbung SS and Alen Subba of Soreng SSS in 2010 and this year Karishma Devi Chettri of Soreng SSS and Jerina Tamang of Himalayan Academy, Soreng have been given this award.
Interestingly, this year both awards have gone to girl students, which is a first.
Mr Subba in his address said that the Hemakarna and Sancharani Subba Memorial Trust has been awarding Rs. 5000/- as scholarship annually to students from the area who have excelled in their class X board exams.
He awarded scholarship of Rs. 5000/- to Karishma Devi Chettri of Soreng Sr. Secondary School, the class X topper amongst government schools of Soreng-Chakung constituency with a score of 8.5 grades (80.5%).
Although the award is only for government school students, this year the trust decided to honour one private school student, Jerina Tamang of Himalaya Academy, Soreng, who not only topped the area but with 9.4 (90.4%) she topped the entire West District.
For her excellent performance, Jerina Tamang was also awarded a scholarship of Rs. 5000/-. He also cited the names of few personalities who have made the constituency proud with excellent performances at both state and national level and said that this should inspire students.
“Society cannot be built in one day, we have to work hard for it and this award is a step towards the making of a society”, he added. Mr. Subba also stated that students who had received this scholarship in the past were doing well in their studies and would definitely make the area proud in the future.
Later, the awardees gave credit to their teachers and parents and thanked the trust for encouraging students through this award. .
On the occasion, the school administration of Soreng Sr. Sec. School also felicitated class XII students who had secured first division.
