GANGTOK, 20 June: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s Sikkim-unit convened a meeting at Ranipool today in accordance with the party’s ongoing awareness campaign to explain the arrangement arrived at between GJM and the West Bengal Government during talks held on 06-07 June which have led to much speculation and rumours.
The meeting was presided over by the Sikkim-GJM vice president, BB Thapa, a press release informs.
The Sikkim-GJM president, Bhawani Pradhan, highlighted that the new government in West Bengal has shown some understanding of the 34-year-old statehood demand of the hill people and now appears ready to accept the proposals made by GJM.
The meeting was also addressed by the vice president, GJM, Sikkim Unit, Deepan Dewan.
The meeting also decided on the formation of the party’s Ranipool unit and discussed new membership procedures, the release informs.
Earlier, the Sikkim-GJM was at Rangpo-Majhitar on 17 June with its awareness campaign on the recent arrangement signed between the GJM and the West Bengal Government.
Sikkim-GJM president, Bhawani Pradhan, stressed that the party had not entered into a “final agreement” on the Gorkhaland issue, informs a press release.
He said that the meeting concerned secretary level talk and that the arrival of such arrangement was a strong move in pursuance of the demand for Gorkhaland. He added that the WB government has shown some consideration to the Gorkhaland demand this time and the party was convinced that it would bear fruit. He also informed that the party president was making all efforts to gain ground lost by Subhash Ghishing in the past.
Expressing that the party is well aware of the emotions of the entire Gorkha Community who still suffer from identity crises, he appealed to them not to protest against the set up which is for the interest of the entire Gorkha Community without understanding the full truth, the release informs.
He further appealed to all party workers along with those belonging to the Dooars and Terai region to maintain faith in the leadership of Bimal Gurung and not to get carried away by rumors. He reassured that the “sacrifices made by the Gorkha community residing in Sikkim will not go in vain”.
The Sikkim-GJM vice president, Deepen Dewan, in turn informed the gathering about the seven points signed during the bilateral talk held on 06-07 June in Kolkata.
Shekhar Subba speaking on the acceptance of the arrangement by the community residing in Sikkim informed about the importance of inclusion of Terai and Dooars in the arrangement.
The meeting was chaired by the vice-president, Sikkim-GJM, BP Thapa, and also addressed by Prakash Chandra Sharma and Mandira Gurung, the release adds.
