Gangtok celebrates World Music Day

TSHERING EDEN
GANGTOK, 21 June: World Music Day, or “FĂȘte de la Musique” as it was originally named when it was first held in 1982 in France, was celebrated here in the capital today at MG Marg.
The purpose behind celebrating this day is to promote music in two ways. First, to encourage amateur and professional musicians to perform on the streets and second, to organise free concerts, making all genres of music accessible to the public.
The Cultural Affairs and Heritage Department along with the North-East Zonal Cultural Centre, Guwahati organised a programme coinciding with this theme to celebrate World Music Day in Sikkim.
With the aim to promote Sikkimese music, local artists as well as providing platform for them, artists from the Culture department as well as independent artists were brought together on the occasion, informed Culture Officer, Lata Rajalim.

Tourists and locals alike were treated to solo and duet performances in Nepali, Bhutia, Lepcha, Sherpa, Limboo, Hindi and even a Sufi dirge. No Big Deal, Liberated Senses and Urban Inc were the three bands that also performed today.
“In the past, the day used to be celebrated at the Nepali Sahitya Parishad Bhawan, which was at a small scale. This year we decided to bring it to the streets, to the general public”,  said Mrs Rajalim. “The basic theme behind the occasion being ‘free music’, there is no entry fee since it is an outdoor function, artists are performing voluntarily and we are also inviting members from the audience to join in and participate”, she further added.
Also present on the occasion were, Joint Secretary, Culture Deptt., Hemanta Basnet and Deputy Secretary, Culture Deptt., Phumpila Topden Bhutia.
