GANGTOK, 30 May: Mayfair Hotels & Resorts, through the Sikkim Hotel & Restaurant Association (SHRA) has become the first tourism corporate house to adopt a village for the promotion of village and rural tourism in the State thus envisioning to create a bridge between the “super luxury” of the Mayfair Resorts and grassroots level tourism stakeholders, informs a press release.
The village of Darap in West Sikkim, a short drive from Pelling, was chosen for such a tie-up by Mayfair since “they have shown a tremendous amount of dedication, persistence and growth over the past few years since the inception of the Darap Eco-Tourism Committee”, informs the Director of Mayfair Gangtok, Sanjna Ray DeNiese.
The village was earlier visited by the chairman of Mayfair Hotels & Resorts, Dilip Ray to chalk out the requirements and speak to the tourism stakeholders from Darap. A truck-load of new mattresses, bed sheets, pillows, curtains, crockery, cutlery and quilt covers were handed over by Ms. Sanjna and Bjorn DeNiese on Friday in the presence of area MLA Prem Lall Subba and DEC president, Sushil Tamang.
In addition to the materials provided, Mayfair Hotels & Resorts will also be assisting Darap in capacity building, marketing assistance and creating a sustainable business development module for the village, the release further mentions.
There are presently around 7-8 home stay operators with about 20 rooms and after this adoption, the capacity will soon rise to about 15 operators with about 35 rooms. Tourists can experience Sikkim village life in this Limboo village with many experiences including ploughing fields, milking cows, angling, food cooked using firewood, local brews, treks, village and jungle walks among others, the release adds. President SHRA, Bhanu Pratap Rasaily also expressed his gratitude to Mayfair and Mr. Ray for this noble initiative.
