NAMCHI, 24 April: The annual meeting of the South Sikkim Tourism Development Society (SSTDS) was held here at Dak Bungalow today. The meeting discussed many issues and agendas related with development of tourism in different parts of the District with primary focus on village tourism.
The meeting was attended by the SSTDS president Gagan Rai, general secretary Himal Tamang, other members of the executive body and representatives from various village tourism societies of South District.
A detailed report on village tourism was presented by members of the respective areas, followed by a discussion on what could be done for the problems being faced by them.
The SSTDS general secretary, in his address, detailed the main motive behind the meeting and shared what South Sikkim has achieved in the last three years.
During the discussions, a proposal was placed to organizing a fair to promote the district’s village tourism destinations. This fair is being projected to be as much about promotion as about fund-raising for the village-level units.
The meeting resolved to hold this fair at the recently-renovated Gandhi Park here.
Representatives from each village tourism unit presented a report and shared their experience, future plans and problems.
The SSTDS president went over the aims and objectives of SSTDS and stressed that it was motivated by a commitment to assist the educated unemployed youth create a sustainable enterprise in the tourism sector.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Passang Rinzing Sherpa, Chairman, Labour Welfare Board, who remarked that South district has been performing well in the field of village tourism.
During the meeting it was decided that one member from each village tourism body will be included in the executive body of SSTDS. Meanwhile, a review meeting has been called for 07 May to finalise the date for the proposed village tourism.
