Parbing-Doban meets to sustain Nirmal Gram status

NAMCHI, 24 April: An awareness programme on Rural Sanitation for the “sustainability of Nirmal Gram” status was held at Parbing Secondary School, South Sikkim on Saturday. The programme was organized by the Parbing Doban Gram Panchayat Unit under the ‘Total Sanitation Campaign’ and was attended by students, teachers and parents of the school.

While addressing the programme, Panchayat Secretary Hari Gurung said that people of rural areas have not been able to take complete benefit of the TSC implemented by the Government. He further said that it was the duty of every individual to look after the infrastructure developed by the government for which a sense of belongingness and civic sense was necessary.
The people of Parbing should be aware of the declining water resources in the area which could result in huge drinking water scarcity in the near future, he added.
He stressed the need of Dhara Vikas in areas like Parbing-Dovan, Niz-Raming and Chuba-Parbing GPUs immediately to save the drinking water sources in the area. Panchayats at Parbing-Dovan GPU are trying their best to sustain the Nirmal Gram Puraskar status and this awareness programme was a part of that initiative, he explained.
Headmaster of the School, Suraj Rai in his address appreciated the step taken by the Panchayats to spread awareness amongst students and parents about the total sanitation programme and also assured cooperation from the school in making it a successful movement.
The programme was also attended by Panchayat President, Chumzey Bhutia, Vice President, Lakpa Choden Sherpa, Members, Lakpa Tshering Sherpa and Dawa Tashi Sherpa along with members of School Management Committee.
