GANGTOK, 01 March: Government Secondary School, Yuksam observed the National Science Day 2011 with an exhibition on Popular Science (Hobby Electronics, Optics and Mechanics), Inter-House Science Quiz Competition and Complex-level Inter-School Painting Competition on the theme ‘Science & Technology in Human Welfare’ for the students of classes IV and V, informs a press release.
Speaking on the occasion, Headmaster Sanjoy Acharyya stressed on the need of PPP (Public Private Partnership) between remote and under-privileged schools and private academic bodies like Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University [VMSU].
Appreciating the achievements and aspirations of the school, chief guest Director Administration VMSU, V Ravindran assured to collaborate with the school – especially in IT & English Language Proficiency of students and faculty of the school through the well-structured IT & Language Laboratory facilities and learned faculty of the university, informs the release.
While deliberating on the occasion, guest of honour Registrar VMSU, Prof. (Dr.) A. K. Ghosh emphasized on the inter-disciplinary outcome of scientific discoveries and inventions. To substantiate his point, he explained about how the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ have found usage in UV Spectroscopy and IR Spectroscopy for research in Bio-chemistry and Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Ghosh, recipient of the Best Young Scientist Award (2002) and JSPS and AvH Fellowships of Japan, requested the school faculty to identify and nurture young students, and motivate them for career opportunities in pharmaceuticals, the release adds.
Earlier on the day, the students under the guidance of teachers and SMDC members of the school launched an ‘Enrolment Drive’ by bringing out a rally to generate awareness on the ‘Right to Education Act 2009’ which guarantees free and compulsory education to all children between the age of 6 – 14 years, the release further mentions. The rally primarily addressed the right and need of education for school drop-outs and also for child labourers employed as domestic help and/or commercial help. Through colourful posters and slogans, the students appealed all to send drop-outs and domestic/commercial helps to school so that they could enjoy the right guaranteed by the constitution.
