GANGTOK, 13 FEB: Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee, in a press release issued today, has questioned the claims of the SDF government about all round development especially in agriculture, horticulture, poultry and the successful implementation of organic farming.
The press release comes in light of the GJM bandh underway in neighbouring Darjeeling which has cut off regular road access, and thus supplies, to Sikkim, and the subsequent shortage of food supplies in the market. The highway, it may be recalled, was declared open for unhindered Sikkim traffic by the GJM today, Day-5 of the present round of bandhs.
The present dismal situation is contrary to the claims of the government as the market bears a deserted look and vegetable and poultry stalls are almost empty, the SPCC release points out, adding that the shortage of vegetable, eggs and chicken has led to a surge in prices, which is adding to the woes of the people.
The release further mentions that even when Sikkim Sangram Parishad was in power with the present SPCC president Nar Bahadur Bhandaru as Chief Minister during the Gorkhaland agitation of the eighties, the national highway remained closed, yet, there was no shortage of commodities and prices were kept in control.
The release also criticizes the SDF government’s decision to file a petition in the Supreme Court to keep NH31A open instead of holding dialogue with the GJM leaders.
“The government has failed to even provide essential commodities like diesel in some areas in the state which speaks volumes of its inaction to solve the problems faced by the people of Sikkim,” the release further states.
