NHPC distributes spectacles, blankets, computers and teaching aids in Lower Dzongu

GANGTOK, 12 Feb: NHPC Ltd’s Teesta-V power station and Teesta-IV project distributed spectacles and blankets to those in need at Phedang in Lower Dzongu, North Sikkim, yesterday and also gifted computers, dual desks and tables for children, tables & chairs for teachers, notice board and writing boards and sports items to three schools - Ling-Dong Secondary School, Hee-Gyathang Sr. Secondary School and Rang-Rang Junior High School – all in areas adjoining the NHPC project sites North Sikkim.

The items were handed over at a ceremony held at the Teesta Stage-IV project office at Phedang and had the DC [North], TN Kazi, as the chief guest accompanied by AK Choudhary, Chief Engineer, Teesta-IV Project, Dr. TKR Naga, CMO, senior officers of NHPC and members of Gram Panchayat along with the beneficiaries. 

In his welcome address, the NHPC Chief Engineer detailed the various initiatives undertaken by the NHPC as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts in the region, informing how in the past one year, Teesta Stage-V has constructed primary school buildings, organised medical camps in remote areas, installed water purifiers, and constructed washrooms at schools etc. 

He also thanked the State Government and people of Sikkim for their continued support and cooperation and urged for this support to continue in the construction of the upcoming Teesta-IV Project, an NHPC press release informs.

Speaking on the occasion, the DC North praised NHPC for development of areas adjoining its project sites. He appreciated the work done by Teesta-V and IV in providing basic necessities to the locals in the adjoining areas and urged the locals to provide their full support and cooperation in the construction of Teesta-IV Project which is to be initiated very soon, the release adds. 

The DC stressed that Teesta was Sikkim’s main source of revenue and construction of hydroelectric projects on this river will not only make the State self-sufficient regarding power but will also help them earn precious revenue, the release concludes.
